Amazon Mechanical Turk, or mturk and Cha Cha are two companies that provide genuine work from home jobs. However, you are not an employee of either company, rather you are an independent contractor hired to do specific tasks. For this reason, neither Amazon nor Cha Cha provide any benefits and you are responsible for reporting any income earned from them on your taxes.
Amazon Mechanical Turk (mTurk)
Amazon Mechanical Turk allows companies to post “tasks” that humans can do better than machines. They call these “Human Intelligence Tasks” or “HITs” For example, identifying a certain object or person in a video, transcription work, and research.
Typically, the pay rate for a task is very low, (the minimum payment is 1/2 a cent per HIT) Amazon charges companies a 10% commission for the work done through mTurk.
Most tasks are very easy to do and outside of a few instances, it is quite easy to get accepted to complete the task. In some instances, you are required by the task giver to take a test. If you pass the test, you are accepted for the task, if you do not, you will not be accepted.
Cha Cha
Cha Cha is a service where someone can ask a question, usually via text message, and get an answer back in a matter of seconds. Questions can also be called in or submitted via the internet. The questions are answered by Cha Cha guides. Cha Cha guides are paid per search, so the more questions answered, the greater their pay. A typical rate is twenty cents per search and searches can take anywhere from two to five minutes to complete.
To become a Cha Cha guide, you are required to pass an entrance test involving how fast you can find information on a given subject on the internet.
Based on the pay rates of both mTurk and Cha Cha, you would be hard pressed to earn a living from participating in either one, even if you put in a full 8 hours. As such, neither works well as an income replacement. If, on the other hand, you are looking for a fun way to earn some extra cash in your spare time, then either one might work for you
