Why Traffic Exchanges Don’t Work

If you’re looking for a low to no cost way to get traffic to your website, odds are that you’ve heard of traffic exchanges. You may have even had them recommended to you as a good source of traffic.

A traffic exchange is a website featuring a rotator where you can get your site seen in exchange for viewing other people’s sites. How many times your site will be seen is often based on credits, which must be either earned by viewing others’ websites for period of time, often between 30 and 60 seconds, or on some traffic exchanges, you can purchase credits. Your site will continue to be shown in rotation with other’s sites as long as you have credits in your account.

The reason that traffic exchanges are largely ineffective advertising vehicles is that most of the people viewing the sites are doing so to gain credits so their own site can be seen. They are not interested in what your site has to offer as much as they’re interested in getting their site seen.

This does not mean that no one will respond to your site from a traffic exchange. If you are offering something of interest to traffic exchange viewers, they might bite. This means that if you are offering anything related to web advertising or making money online, you might get something out of it. However the chances of that are slim.

The better traffic exchanges will have longer view times and will not offer credits for purchase. Purchasing credits defeats the purpose of the traffic exchange…i.e., a visit to your site in exchange for a visit to someone else’s. If they’ve purchased credits, they get to have visits to their site without having to visit yours.

You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site.
