4 Website Traffic generation Mistakes That Are Costing You Sales

Getting traffic to your website is the staple of internet marketing. Without traffic , you can’t make sales or get leads, and without sales or leads, you can’t make money. This article will explain the 4 website traffic generation mistakes that are the most deadly to your internet business.

Mistake # 1: Buying Guaranteed traffic

Guaranteed traffic services allow you to buy a certain amount of visitors that are guaranteed to visit your site and stay for a certain amount of time. How many visitors you get depends on how much you are willing to spend: more visitors costs more money.

The problem with guaranteed traffic is that it is not particularly targeted to what you have to offer and therefore none of these visitors is likely to buy from you. Guaranteed traffic is good for temporarily boosting your web statistics, but as a marketing tool, it is not very effective.

Mistake # 2: Using Pay per click Services Without Doing Any Research

Starting a pay per click campaign without carefully doing some research into your keywords and target audience as well  as a carefully planned advertising budget can be a disaster. You can spend hundreds, even thousands of dollars on a pay per click campaign without getting a single sale out of it.

This is not to say that pay per click advertising is not effective. Pay per click advertising can be very effective and extremely profitable if you know what you’re doing. You must carefully study your market and select keywords you know will be competitive and relatively cheap.

Mistake #3: Using Safelists

A safelist consists of a group of people, mostly other internet marketers, who agree to receive email solicitations from each other in  exchange for being able to send out their own email solicitations to the list.

The reason that safelists are not very effective is that most people join to be able to promote their own product and are generally not interested in actually reading the email solicitations of others, much less purchasing anything.

Mistake # 4: Using Traffic Exchanges

Traffic exchanges are like safelists in that the people in the traffic exchange agree to visit other members’ websites in exchange for having those members visit theirs. Usually, traffic exchanges are credit based, with a certain amount of credits being equal to one visit to your site. In order to earn credits, you must view a certain number of member sites, and remain on the site for a certain time period, usually a minute or so.

Traffic exchanges are no more effective than safelists, because again, the membership is composed of mostly other internet marketers who are looking to get their site seen, not look at your site or buy what you have to offer.

There are far better, and more effective website traffic generation methods for you to use. Consider writing short articles about the niche to which your website belongs, submitting your content to Web 2.0 sites like Squidoo, Ehow, or Hubpages, or using the social networks like Twitter and Facebook. If you have money, you can try PPC advertising on Google Adwords, MSN Adcenter, or Yahoo Search Marketing.
