I had an epiphany while watching The Dr. Oz show this morning while I was working out. This epiphany spurs me to write this blog entry: our nation has become a giant fear factory. Every thing we read and hear inspires fear. We’re afraid of germs, we’re afraid of terrorists, we’re afraid of losing our jobs. In fact, we’re so busy being afraid that we have no time to think creatively about how we can solve our problems.

The first quarter of the Dr. Oz show today was dedicated to health dangers while traveling, from getting sick from other people on airplanes, to germs found in hotel rooms, and even your relative’s house. The show is hosted by the dapper looking Dr. Mehmet Oz, author of the book “You, the Owner’s Manual.” You can read more about it here. He is also the spokesman  for the RealAge website, which claims to determine your “biological age” by analyzing certain data that you put in. However, there has been some controversy over the site using the data gathered to market pharmaceutical products.

In the travel segment of the show,  a noted germ doctor (some balding, grey-bearded guy,) I cannot remember his name, went out to swipe common surfaces in hotel rooms and even a relative’s house to show all the “harmful” bacteria and viruses found on surfaces like the bathroom sink and even the bed. Ok, so we know that there are germs everywhere, no duh! Dr. Oz did not do what he should have done and simply recommend common cleanliness practices, like washing your hands often and avoiding rubbing your eyes or nose, particularly after shaking hands with someone. No, he and this germ doctor actually recommend that you bring your own coverings and cover the bed, the pillow cases, and you should not walk barefoot in your hotel for fear of foot fungi! The message is clear: Be afraid, be very afraid!

The Dr Oz Show is not the only fear peddler in the media. Pretty much every news program or talk show will discuss the latest thing you should be afraid of and it happens on a daily basis. The media isn’t going to stop peddling fear, because apparently, fear sells. The challenge we face, therefore, is to battle the fearmongers and not allow them to affect our national psyche.

How is all of this important to running a home or internet business? Well, I frequent Internet marketing forums such as the Warrior forum and Digital Point, and probably the most common thread that I see is in those places comes from people seeking reassurance about some aspect of their IM business. Whether it is asking if they should buy a certain product or if they should try a certain technique, they’re always asking and never acting. While it is fine to seek advice, it is not fine to keep questioning your choices to the point where you’re frozen in place. It is the worst mistake you can do. Inaction will get you nowhere, and the simple truth is that you will never reap the rewards unless you take some risks.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt presided over this great nation during a crisis equal to the one we face today. He inspired us to soldier on by his famous quote “we have nothing to fear but fear itself.” There is no greater enemy to prosperity than fear.
