Dear Email Marketers & List Builders

I’ve joined a number of Internet marketing type mailing lists over the years, usually in exchange for some free information or access to a free program, and in that time I’ve made the following observations:

1: The more emails I receive from you, the less likely I am to pay any attention to them at all. There are some marketers who feel the need to email me offers or even information on a daily basis. These, I insta-delete because I see this is as an abuse of the privilege that I have granted you in sharing my email address with you.

2: The less frequent your emails, the more I am apt to at least take a look at them. For one, I appreciate that you’re not flooding my inbox, and for another, because I know you’re not just trying to shove more offers on me, I am more inclined to read them. Less truly is more.

3: Consider the savviness of your market. Are you marketing to newbies or IM professionals? I am in the latter category, and some of the emails that I see in my inbox are blatantly appealing to sheer emotion. I’m not going to fall for that because I know better.

4: The too chummy email really turns me off. I don’t know you and you don’t know me, so I am not your friend. Please respect my intelligence enough to realize that I know the difference between correspondence from a friend and correspondence from another IMer. I know you’re trying to sell me something, and that’s ok. If you’re not obnoxious about it, I may take a look at what you have to offer.

5: Please stop with the free ebook offers. If I joined your list to get one free ebook from you, I don’t necessarily want any more. You’ve already got me. There’s no need to bombard me with more free stuff.  Just because the information is free, doesn’t mean I will consider it a valuable contribution. This schtick is old and it’s time to retire it.

The bottom line is this: most marketers seem to be going to great lengths to disguise that they’re trying to sell something.  Why? News flash! We know that when we sign up to get the free ebook or free whatever, you’re going to use our email address to pitch stuff to us. We know you’re not giving away anything for purely altruistic purposes, so stop trying to pretend you are.

Building a list and using email to market to that list is a tried and true winner, and the most successful IMers do have huge lists. The key is using them properly.  Don’t flood your list with emails on a daily basis, and stop trying to pretend that you’re not selling something. Be honest, and in the end,  you’ll be singing a merry song and dancing your way to the bank.
