Internet forums can be an excellent source of free website traffic generation. As with all advertising using any of the social media, of which forums are a part, there are four guidelines that you must follow to ensure that you aren’t banned and so that you can get results.
Contribute To The Community
The primary thing you need to remember when participating in forums is that you need to contribute something of value to the other forum users. People join forums to participate in an online community of like minded individuals. They are looking for a place to seek knowledge, share information, or just to chat. If you can contribute to the conversation in a way that lends value to the other forum members, you will gain their trust and they will be more likely to visit your website or blog as a result.
Don’t Be Promotional In Your Forum Posts.
Related to contributing to the community is not posting what would constitute a blatant advertisement as a forum post. If you do this, you will likely find yourself banned for being a spammer.
Make Sure The Forum Theme Matches Your Niche
Although most forums have off-topic sections where just about anything can be discussed, you want to make sure that the forum theme matches your niche. For example if your niche is gardening, then don’t join a dog obedience forum and make gardening related posts.
Only Promote Where It is Welcome
Some forums allow commercial links as long as they fit in with the general subject matter of the forum, and others do not allow commercial links anywhere for any reason. You can usually find this information in the forum rules, usually in the form of a tacked post at the top of the forum page. If the rules are not clear or you are in any way unsure, send a private message to a forum moderator or administrator. Never post a commercial link if you are unsure whether or not it is allowed because if it isn’t allowed, you may get banned before you can even begin to use the forum.
Only Promote In Your Signature
As long as commercial links are allowed, you can use your signature to promote your site. Most forums will allow you to create a "signature line" that will appear at the bottom of all of your forum posts. In this line, you can include a link to your website or your blog, with a call to action. It is in your signature where you can do your hard selling and be as promotional as you like.
Don’t Post Just To get Your Signature Seen
Don’t make useless an inane posts simply for signature exposure. For example, don’t post a series of "me too" or "I agree" posts in a number of different threads. Posts like these simply clutter the forum and are considered to be spam. They also make you look really stupid, which is not the impression you want to make.
By following the four guidelines listed above, you can use forums all over the internet to get free traffic to your website.
