I was recently looking at creating a Squidoo lens based on one of my blog posts to get more traffic, but as I was reading over the SquidDon’ts, I found the that my topic was suddenly included in the SquidDon’ts. In other words, Squidoo no longer allows lenses in my particular niche.

Now, had I not had my own hosting and domains, had I been relying on Squidoo to host my content, I would be completely out of luck as all of my hard work in developing and marketing my content would have flown out the window.

Whatever the case, they have ultimate control over YOUR content and therefore, your income. If you’re like me, and you rely on your online income to make your living, something like Squidoo declaring your niche verboten and taking down your lenses would really hurt you financially, wouldn’t it?

Therefore, the wisest and most secure way for you to guarantee that your content stays alive is to host it yourself on your own domain. You may be thinking that you don’t have money to cover hosting and domain costs and you certainly have no web-design skills. Not to worry. Hosting and domains are both dirt cheap these days. You can get hosting for maybe $5 a month and a domain will run you $10. That’s chicken feed compared to the security it affords you.

As for web-design most hosting companies provide templates and editor programs that will help you to design your site, regardless of your lack of web-design skills. There are also free programs you can download that will do the same thing.

The bottom line is this: do you really want someone else controlling your content and your income? That’s exactly what you’re doing when you use free content platforms like Squidoo.
