Blog commenting is one website traffic generation strategy. It is free and can be effective if used correctly.
The right way to use blog commenting to drive traffic to your own website or blog is to participate in the conversation in a genuine manner. You’ve probably heard this before; in more traditional internet marketing speak it is usually referred to as "building relationships." You may be scratching your head and wondering "what the heck does that mean?"
It’s really quite simple: Follow blogs that you like that are in the same niche you’re in, or in some other highly related niche, and leave real responses that actually contribute in some way to the conversation.
You don’t have to write a long winded exposition on the topic of the blog post and you don’t have to even agree with what the blogger is saying. You just have to be genuine and on-topic.
You should also make sure that the blog’s content is highly related to your own blog’s content. Google is about highly relevant content and that includes the content on the sites that link to yours.
There really isn’t a short cut method to do this. Sure, you could buy software that will auto-post comments for you, but did you know that most bloggers moderate their comments? The auto-post entries are unlikely to be of any quality and may in fact be placed on blogs which don’t relate in any way to what your blog is about.
This ends up being counterproductive. Remember that you aren’t just looking for any old traffic. You’re looking for targeted traffic. Blogging is about niche marketing, which means you pick an area and create content about it. Google picks it up and you get traffic from people interested in your topic and who will likely buy affiliate products related to that topic.
Unrelated comments, nonsense comments, do nothing for you. Sure, if the blogger does not moderate comments, a few auto-posts might get in, but in the long run, any traffic you get out of it is garbage traffic, and your site will rank no better (perhaps even worse with Google caffeine.)
Not spamming other folks’ blogs is also really about being a good “internet citizen.” Would you tolerate a bunch of nonsense, junk comments on your blog? Ask yourself this question before you try any of the “short-cut” methods of blog commenting.
