Blog Commenting: You’re Doing It Wrong

I run two other blogs besides this one, and every day, I have to go through the comments that are left to moderate them. Out of every one salient and valid comment that gets left, ten others will be trash and get marked as spam.

Now, I am an online marketer and I understand that people want backlinks to their own websites and blogs. I push my stuff as well, so believe me, I understand.  I give backlink juice where I can, but lately I’m being a lot less generous.

Before, I would approve even the most vague comment, such as “I like your site!!!” so long as the link posted was related to the content of my blog. I no longer do this because these comments add no value. Then there are people who leave comments that are related to the subject of my site but not to the subject of the post. These comments are also not getting allowed any longer…because again, they impart no value. It is plainly obvious that the commenter didn’t read the post and is just using some auto commenting software to leave a reply.

Blog commenting done right is about truly participating in your niche’s community. You will find that you get much more bag for your buck by leaving genuine comments related to the post to which you are responding. Surely you have something insightful to say? Surely you have an opinion? Either of these would be acceptable and much welcomed comments on any of the blogs that I run.

You don’t have to agree with me. Heck, you can be vehemently against everything I write and I would still love to hear your point of view, so long as it is conveyed politely. I’m sure pretty much every serious blogger out there feels like I do.

You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site.
